DC Comics has been doing direct to home animated features since 1993 when it released Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (which did come out in the theaters but was meant, in the beginning, to only be for home release) which have garnered respect among many fans as fantastic renditions of the characters and comics.

Moonraker.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 1.

In October of 2012, The CW put it's toe in the superhero waters with it's "Batman Begins" style show, Arrow, which would go on to birth The Flash in 2014 and out of a crossover between them would spin the most ambitious comic book show yet.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

In 1993, after the success of Batman: The Animated Series, Warner Brothers planned a follow up film for home release, yet late in the production, they switch gears and decided to release the film in theaters on Christmas Day which was met with critical acclaim but not enough marketing to make a dent at the box office.

The Dark Tower.

Stephen King's first book in his Dark Tower series was released back in 1982 and the latest book in the series came out in 2012 and in most of that time the film version has languished in development hell, until now.

Battlefront II: Inferno Squad.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

In 1997, Luc Besson released his film The Fifth Element which became a sci-fi for many. During the making of that film, he'd hired the Valerian comic artist Jean-Claude Mézières, who asked him why he was not just adapting the Valerian comic instead.
